MICHELLE CRISOL DE OCAMPO*
Last Sunday, April 15, was the birthday of my mother, Marilou, who passed away last year. As I was at mass reflecting on our parish priest’s sermon, I realized how it was so timely. It was because he was talking about the transformative power of the Risen Christ. He said that all have scars, hurts, and battles to face in our lives. But the good news is that Christ’s love promises that we can turn these into grace, glory, and new life.
This message struck me because I saw how my mother dealt with her illness. Aside from being a dialysis patient, she had to contend with her other health issues and afflictions. She always showed such grace and acceptance of her situation. My mother treated her sufferings as a sacrifice, thus giving glory to God. She never let her afflictions be a hindrance to living her life. She would meet up with her friends in excitement. Even if she had already retired, her enthusiasm for going to work remained. She also spearheaded a support group for dialysis patients at the hospital. My mom was living life with the zeal of those half her age.
When she passed, people would tell us how much of an inspiration my mother was. Indeed, her life was a testament to God’s faithfulness and presence – and this is how her memory lives on.
*Michelle’s relationship towards the end of her mother’s life was eventful. It was a blessed time of grace and love for both mother and daughter. Michelle accompanied Marilou to dialysis, which lasted for three years.
What a great reflection of a loving daughter to her beloved mother. Michelle with her busy schedule, had put priority on Marilou’s dialysis days knowing that her mom’s days may be numbered; a woman who brought life her, gave nourishment, had guided and was her best friend. Memories of a beloved Mother and best friend are cherished and will always linger in a daughter’s heart.
Bravo, Michelle ! You are indeed inspiring. And yes – your mom handled everything with grace .
