Sacred Space in Cyberspace

CELERY

This is an updated article I wrote in August 2018.  At no other time has there been a need to learn the practical use of technology, starting from the simple mobile phone to the tablet and other devices. This is not to mention the hundreds of applications available to meet every kind of need.

The usefulness of the internet cannot be overemphasized at this time of the Covid pandemic.  It becomes even safer to spend time with family and friends over either Face Time, Messenger, or Zoom than in each other’s homes.

Over twelve years ago, I spent a weekend with my family at a beach resort. We attended Sunday Mass in a makeshift chapel. When the priest turned the pages of a worn-out Bible and looked for the gospel reading for the day, he could not find it. He realized the page was missing.  As I watched the sudden change in his expression, I lifted my phone and waved it to him. He saw me right away because I was standing in the second row. He showed relief and motioned me to bring my phone to him.  It was the first time he had ever read the gospel from a phone, and he expressed his amazement to me after the Mass.

Following this experience, my fascination with the world of technology in my daily life grew.  But I have realized that I can get hooked into it and allow these tools to either benefit me or become an escape. The devices such as the smartphone, tablet, laptop, or the internet appear useful and harmless. But if I do not watch out, these could be time-consuming and a powerful distraction.

In essence, I have discovered technology to be an excellent companion in my search for God. One cannot deny God’s existence and accessibility in this area. I have, for example, an extensive collection of spiritual books in my Kindle application. I also have different versions of the entire Bible. For even quicker access, I have applications of classic devotional books that I can read anytime with a tap of my finger. The internet is full of information and resources on spiritual matters. Religious music and Christian art abound, and sights and sounds of God’s creation beautifully depicted in pictures and videos. For instance, this blog attempts to invite the reader to reflect on various topics for the soul.

How can I not find God when he is near everyone and everything that exists.  He is the central figure and reason for the creation of this website. Its primary purpose is to give him glory. This is his sacred space where love and life-giving words abound and become alive and present to people he touches.
