What Time Is It

The sundial (topmost) at Jantar Mantar, Jaipur, India, is the world’s largest stone sundial. It is one of the nineteen astronomical instruments built at the observatory from 1729 to 1734 and is a UNESCO World Heritage.

AMANDA T. LISING

Here I was looking at the Observatory in India – these 18th-century instruments – that I suddenly felt so inspired to write about it.

Why?

Think of those wristwatches that cost so much money nowadays. These are tiny with alarm clocks, ringtones, and touch screens. But as much as technology can give to us, it can take away. It takes away our ability to watch the world unfold without manipulation.

As I looked at one of the older sundials in the world, nature was actually moving… communicating…manifesting. I was powerless to watch God move time by the setting of the sun billions of miles away.

I’m not implying that we should just sit back and watch the world go by. Instead, we can allow nature to move us and, at the same time, make intelligent decisions as we move along. As they say, pick your battles in life. Choose when you know God inspires you and not by your own voice.

During this trip to India, we spent a lot of the tour traveling by bus. And it gave me a lot of time to write all these thoughts down. I noticed that the more time I spent in this country, the more it changed me. Physically, I was finally adapting to spicy food. Emotionally, I developed the patience to wait for others in the tour group.

BUT SPIRITUALLY, I WAS ALLOWING GOD TO CAST HIS SUN ON MY SUNDIAL – TRANSFORMING MY FAITH IN HIM AND LEARNING HOW TO PERCEIVE THE WORLD HE CREATED.

  1. As am reading your article and watching Tito Eddie doing his therapy slowly going up & down the stairs, someone said, “Your husband is getting better!” I replied, “All in God’s time!” He is in control of everything and all we have to do is surrender to Him! Thanks for your wonderful insight and sharing!

  2. Seeing the world from God’s perspective and yes, God’s time… isn’t that one secret to inner peace? Thanks for reminding us, Amanda!

  3. A reminder to busy people to spend time to smell the flowers and watch the sunset to discern God’s direction in our lives. Thank you Amanda for your inspiring insight. Tita Tina Torres

  5. Such an eye opener, Amanda! You are right- “pick your battles in life” and just listen to where God is leading you, because we do trust Him all the time. Thank you for sharing.

  6. A great reread for me, after these two years since I first read your piece, Amanda. It just means that the thoughts you had shared are timeless.

  7. Hi Amanda thank you for this inspiring reflection. If you will let me, I would like to modify your words and say that its so important for each of us to let God “cast His SON” on our sundial. It is truly our knowledge of the Son that will bring sense to each moment that we live in this world of time and space.
