NANCY CHICHIOCO-RAZON
I chanced upon this old song I learned in grade school – “Spirit of God in the clear running water.” I found it so timely listening to it that I ended up praying with it, looping the song several times until it inspired me to pick up my canvas and express its soothing message. My painting mood stirred me to paint an imagery that would limn the calmness I longed for, especially during the pandemic.
I tried to follow the song’s lyrics – initially painting a pleasant sky and a lulling seascape until I got enthralled with the vast meadows. I saw myself painting flowers of vibrant colors and envisioned healthy green foliage. I repeatedly painted long-stemmed leaves, the poppies red and orange, and added bright pink weeds to depict the uniqueness of nature. The branches also remained firm as the wind was blowing them. There were myriad blooms, showing the consistency of my brush strokes aligned with the movement of nature. As I was enjoying the patterns, I was slowly connecting with the details of my painting. I felt the plants flowing, envisioning myself in the scene amidst the cool breeze. The breath of the spirit gushed through my hands. I felt the rhythm and comfort of being in solitude while finishing another expression of God’s creation. A moment of prayer with painting. I am truly grateful.
