NANCY CHICHIOCO RAZON
Sometimes I stare at my white canvas, trying to find what to paint. This creative block is quite frustrating because I get confused with so many ideas and lose focus on something inspiring for me to paint. During this long weekend, I knew I wanted to create something new. But somehow, there was no spark flowing from within me.
I paused for hours and took a break. My prayer time led me to my favorite verse, Psalm 23, which I slowly read and felt the Holy Spirit working on me. This Psalm allowed some bright lights to flash, and I visualized the verses on my white canvas, being a background of God’s beautiful creation – flowers – my favorite subject.
It felt like the barrier opened for me to discover a new painting technique that I had never tried before. I wanted the words of Psalm 23 integrated into my artwork, not just a caption for my finished painting. It led me to read more about this art technique, ensure I had all the materials needed, and be careful with every step. It was something new, but I trusted that my guardian angel was guiding me.
I picked up my canvas and eagerly tried the alternate approach to my painting, i.e., a collage of words from Psalm 23 embracing the beautiful flowers at the center of the Good Shepherd’s table. I felt amazed and discovered a creative way of integrating these words into my white canvas. I purposely set this verse at the top of the canvas :
Psalm 23: 5
“You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.”
I am truly grateful for being freed from my creative block and for finding meaning in the details of my artwork. Rejoice; my Lord, the Good Shepherd, always prepares the table for me.

Nancy, I think it is your openness to grace that led you to your inspiration. You resorted to prayer. You have a partner in the Holy Spirit who guides you to come up with beautiful artworks. You are His hand on the canvas. What a partnership!
You are truly blessed with a soecial talent – not only to paint beautifully but to make the painting give glory to God and lead others closer to God.

Nancy, when your artistry seeks to express God’s presence in you and leads others (including myself) to experience Him through you as well, it goes beyond mere talent. I believe it’s discipleship. God keep you and that ever-inspired brush in His company always!
