CYNTHIA CAMPOS

This is a poem I composed when I was diagnosed with breast cancer and was given only 3-6 months to live. But God in His goodness and mercy and with the help of Mama Mary’s intercession through Our Lady of Manaoag, I am still alive now.

As I come to think and wonder
About life and what’s beyond there
I can’t help but really shudder
At the thought that this life
Would soon be over.

And so I said to myself, “Always remember
Everything you must do should always matter,
Every word you must say should lead further
The people you encounter to that very place up there
Where someday we’ll meet our Maker.”

Making the most of what’s remaining
Is a very apt and wonderful saying.
The truth it is revealing
Is something really worth considering.

If in the past we’ve been so questioning
About why it is happening
Now is the time to start answering
The calls we have been hearing.

We can be more helpful,
To others’ cares be mindful
Share their burdens so bountiful,
Through you let them know that God is merciful.

Some people are lost and frightened
Not knowing where they are headed.
If we could make them feel needed,
They would surely feel sheltered.

Not to forget those who are in pain
Because in sickness they are lain.
Any act of kindness would not be in vain
If their worth and strength they will regain.

Through the brokenness of others we could be builders
Shattered hopes restore, shattered pieces recover
We could be light bearers.
To the right path we could usher.

A hug, a kiss is a sign of affection
Be not afraid to show your devotion
A note, a word of appreciation
Every correction give without hesitation.
You’ll never guess their satisfaction
To be given that precious attention.

Making the most of what’s remaining
That is what I am hoping
The fulfillment that I am longing
Is to make this life worth remembering

All my life I’ve been blessed
With beautiful things I’ve been graced
But there’s one thing more I want to request
Dear Lord, before I go to rest

That my life be a treasure chest
Of lessons learned and trials passed Of words of faith and hopes that last With binding chains of love so true
With my inspiration only You.
