PIA NAZARENO-ACEVEDO
I used to say tomorrow isn’t promised, but today, I say… later is not promised. We are invited to be present and live from moment to moment…
This year, I turn 50, celebrating my 25th wedding anniversary with my husband Jim, and hitting the 15th-year milestone of my company, OneCORE, whose primary purpose is to help individuals find their PERSONAL CLARITY because “you cannot give what you do not have…”
Life has a way of testing our resilience and revealing our true selves, often in the most unexpected and intense ways. For me, this revelation came through a near-death experience that not only altered my perspective but also ignited a deep commitment to personal clarity. This journey taught me invaluable lessons about the importance of investing in our inner selves, and I invite you to join me in what I call the “Clarity Movement™.”
I met my husband while teaching college theology at the Ateneo de Manila Loyola Schools. My husband used to be with the Jesuits, and I’m not the reason he left the society… my conscience is clear, haha!
The Turning Point: My Near-Death Experience
It was January 1, 2004. My eldest son was 3, and my second son was barely six months old. It was an ordinary day swiftly transformed into a moment of profound significance. I found myself in a brush with death that left me physically unharmed but emotionally and spiritually transformed. I went to bed feeling fine, but the following day, I woke up with difficulty breathing—anaphylactic shock as a result of severe allergies. As I lay there, facing the fragility of life, I experienced a powerful shift in my resolve for personal clarity. Time seemed to slow, and a sense of peace enveloped me I had never known before.
This near-death experience served as a wake-up call, forcing me to confront the essence of my being and the direction of my life. In those critical moments, I realized that clarity was not just a desirable trait but a necessary foundation for living a meaningful and fulfilling life. This realization catalyzed my journey toward inner work and personal clarity.
The Value of Personal Clarity
Personal clarity is the compass that guides us through life’s uncertainties and challenges. It allows us to manage our limited time and energy and focus on what powers our values. My near-death experience at the age of 29 underscored the importance of this clarity, revealing how it can reshape our approach to life.
If you’d like to learn more about the journey to personal clarity, you can explore my book Focus on What Matters* which delves deeper into these concepts and offers practical guidance for embracing clarity.
A Circle of Positivity and Encouragement
Throughout my journey, I have been blessed with many sources of inspiration, including Celia Lising. For over 65 years, Tita Celia has been a close friend and classmate of my mother, Evelyn, and later my father, Norberto “Boy” Nazareno. She has been more than just a friend; she has been a source of unwavering positivity and encouragement in their lives. Her presence has provided a steadfast circle of support that has influenced my parents and my approach to life and clarity. Their enduring friendship is a testament to the power of genuine relationships grounded in mutual respect, love, and encouragement. It has somehow shaped the way I view leadership, service, and the importance of surrounding oneself with a circle of positivity.
Investing in Personal Clarity
Investing in personal clarity is imperative, as tomorrow is not promised. Personal clarity is not a one-time effort but a continuous journey of self-discovery and development. Here are some key practices that have helped me along the way:
1. Learn to Love Being Present Moment to Moment
Mindfulness practices have enabled me to stay present and attuned to my thoughts, feelings, and spirit. Meditation, in particular, has been instrumental in calming the mind and enhancing focus, allowing me to approach life’s challenges with a clear and composed mindset.
2. Commit to Intentional Habits of Self-Love
Proactively curating your day around habits and activities that fill you up, recharge, and support you is crucial. Whether spending time with loved ones, engaging in hobbies, or pursuing physical activities, these intentional habits create a balanced and fulfilling life.
3. Embrace Change and Adaptability with Open Arms
Life is inherently unpredictable, and the ability to adapt is essential for maintaining clarity. By staying open to change and viewing setbacks as opportunities for growth, we can cultivate resilience and a deeper sense of purpose.
