In the Spirit of the Magi

In the Christian world, we celebrate the Three Kings (later known as Epiphany) on January 6.  In my youth and through most of my adult life, that was the day Christmas decors and lights came down in our house and elsewhere, marking the end of the Christmas season. I didn’t give much thought to the wise men or Magi, as they were called, coming to visit Jesus.

In recent years, however, the meaning of that visit has taken on relevance in my life that I had not seen nor appreciated before. Much legend surrounds the story of these “learned” and “distinguished” men as astrologers following stars.  What is certain is that they pursued this one brilliant star in their search for the child born king of the Jews, whom they had heard about. These wise men are examples for me in faith, perseverance, humility, and generosity.

Coming from the East, the journey of the Magi to Bethlehem by camels was long and arduous. But they persisted. The gospel of Matthew 12: 9-11 says, “And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house, they saw the child with Mary, his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. They opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”

Today, I have the greatest admiration for the Magi. It is their attitude that makes me appreciate them so much. In my reflection, several questions come to mind over this brief but remarkable event.

Like the Magi, what star do I follow in faith to get to God?  In humility, how do I seek him continuously and give him my constant praise, adoration, and worship?  What do I offer, or how do I give of myself to him?

The Magi represented the Gentiles who had not heard of Jesus. They were the first to announce his coming as the Light to all nations. In a small way, this blog attempts to fulfill a similar task – sharing this good news with you.
